Opened in 1994 by longtime Greenwich resident and businessman John Farrell, Boxcar Cantina remains a family-owned establishment now run by John’s son, James. Boxcar Cantina specializes in authentic Northern New Mexican cuisine, which offers a unique alternative to typical Southwest or Tex-Mex fare. The Southwest consists of distinct culinary regions, each shaped by its own traditions and influences. Northern New Mexican cuisine, in particular, blends three cultures—Native American, Spanish, and Anglo-European—rooted in traditional Mexican cooking.
