Greenwich Star Athlete Peter Vomvolakis Embarks on Naval Academy Journey
Greenwich High School senior and football co-captain Peter Vomvolakis is taking his passion for teamwork and service to the next level. On Wednesday, December 4, surrounded by family, coaches, and teammates in the GHS Media Center, Vomvolakis officially signed his National Letter of Intent to play football at the United States Naval Academy.
A standout athlete, Vomvolakis is a two-time New Haven Register First Team All-State player and a two-time All-FCIAC First Team honoree. Playing as both a center and defensive tackle, he has been a cornerstone of the Cardinals' football program, starting in 48 consecutive games and helping lead the team to the 2022 CIAC Class LL State Championship.
Vomvolakis, proudly sporting Navy Midshipmen gear at the ceremony, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and his excitement for the journey ahead.
"I always wanted that brotherhood environment, and the Naval Academy was perfect for me," he said. "Meeting with the players, I felt a true sense of family. I can’t wait to take the next step in my football and educational career."
In addition to excelling on the field, Vomvolakis is embracing the Naval Academy's commitment to service. With a five-year service requirement after graduation, he’s eager to give back.
"This country has given my family so much, and I wanted to serve and give my time back," said Vomvolakis.
Peter’s mother, Ariadne, shared her pride in his decision to pursue this path. "It’s a serious and mature choice," she said. "He just knew the Naval Academy was the right fit for him."
GHS Principal Ralph Mayo applauded Vomvolakis for his accomplishments both on and off the field. As a former offensive and defensive line coach, Mayo appreciated the recognition Vomvolakis has brought to linemen, a position often overlooked.
"It’s an honor for us to have you join the Naval Academy," Mayo said. "You’re a true testament to hard work and leadership."
Head coach Anthony Morello echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Vomvolakis’s impact beyond the game.
"Peter has grown not just as a player but as a human being. He’s the heartbeat of this program and a benchmark for the whole town," Morello said.
With his commitment to the Naval Academy set, Vomvolakis will report to Annapolis in July 2025 to begin his journey as a Midshipman. But for now, he remains focused on the Cardinals' current season, aiming for another state championship as they prepare for a rematch with Staples High School in the CIAC Class LL semifinals.
"This year, our end goal is to get back to the state championship," Vomvolakis said, determined to lead his team to victory.
Peter Vomvolakis exemplifies the values of dedication, leadership, and service, making him a standout not just in Greenwich but across the broader football and academic community.
